Hangar 9 P-47
Bob Frey's new P-47 shown just before touch-down at our club field (Sun Valley Fliers) last Friday after it's 3rd or 4th flight.., not sure which. Never satisfied to go with just a plain, box-stock model, Bob highly altered/changed this model cosmetically, changing the markings to Lt. Frank Klibbe's "Little Chief," buzz-no. HV * V He simply painted right over the Ultracote covering where required and added panel lines, rivets, data stencils and weathering before sealing the entire model with KlasKote satin-clear epoxy. Also added were the pilot, a great cockpit, the 8 50-cal guns, nav-lights, a highly detailed dummy engine from Frank Tiano Enterprises and a functional hatch on the port side of the fuse, just forward of the canopy, which houses the fuel filler, radio switch, charging jack, etc.. It'd be very difficult to tell that this was not a ground-up kit-built aircraft.
Performance can't be praised highly enough; ground handling is superb and flight characteristics are, how should I say it, sparkling! Low passes appear to be easily in the 100mph range, give or take, based on comparison with my Midget Mustang which has been radar-verified at 102mph. The big Jug appears to be equally fast if not faster. It grooves like it's on a wire, has great vertical and performs all fighter-type aerobatics with precision and ease; point-rolls are especially pretty. Thus far, the stock retracts have funtioned flawlessly and we expect they'll continue to do so as long as they're not subjected to undue abuse.
